Description
The Center for Writing, Language, and Literacy, with faculty from the Department of English, represents expertise in applied linguistics, technical/professional communication, and second-language acquisition. Our objective is to identify and support interdisciplinary research initiatives that can attract federal and private funding and contracts in the areas of writing, language, and literacy. The Center offers expertise that includes communication issues relevant to Homeland Security; Health Literacy; Language and the Law; Financial Information; and Educational Curriculum and Professional Development and Assessment, among others.
Mission
The Center for Writing, Language, and Literacy provides rigorous research that informs practice in professional areas. Through interdisciplinary research and outreach, C-WLL will
- Increase knowledge through research that examines critical issues in writing, language, and literacy
- Improve practice through training, testing, and applying research results
- Provide regional and national leadership on issues affecting language use in professional arenas
- Disseminate research results in academic venues as well as to community leaders and members
- Increase the intellectual matrix of the University by providing venues for outside speakers to interact with UNC Charlotte faculty and students, and the Charlotte community on issues related to writing, language, and literacy
- Provide graduate and undergraduate students with research opportunities to support and complement their educational experiences at UNC Charlotte
