My research interests focus on issues surrounding the learning of English as a second/additional language, particularly issues regarding identity construction in and through language learning, power dynamics, and language ideologies. I investigate how these social dynamics are constituted in/as interaction, using fine-grained discourse analysis.
My understanding of language learning processes is informed by sociocultural theories of learning, including Vygotskian, Language Socialization, and Situated Learning (Community of Practice) theories.
My current research looks at the situated character of language competence, the notion of empowerment in critical pedagogy in ESL classrooms, the construction of language ideologies in interactions involving minority language speakers, and qualitative research methodologies, particularly the co-constructed, mediated nature of interview data. |
